Prebiotics May Help Manage Metabolic Diseases

In that overweight/obesity can change the composition and balance of microorganisms in the gut, Nathalie M. Delzenne, from Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium), and colleagues assessed how specific nutrients, such as prebiotics, may be able to induce beneficial changes in gut microbiota and thereby help to manage obesity and related disorders. The team notes that existing data shows that inulin-type prebiotics may reduce appetite, increase satiety, and thereby decrease the amount of energy consumed. Their new study, conducted on animal models, reports that prebiotics have the potential to beneficially manage metabolic diseases in the overweight/obese.
