Immune Enhancing Ayurvedic Remedies

Having a strong immune system seems to be more important now than ever before. There are several holistic options that you can take that may help to boost your immune system and possibly reduce the risk of infection such as following social distancing, proper nutrition, exercise, and proper personal hygiene. 

Several studies suggest that nutrient dense foods can help to bolster immune responses to infection and disease. Remedies that draw from traditional Ayurvedic practices are known to boost body functions, which includes immunity, metabolism, and blood circulation. Ayurveda is centuries old and started in India over 5,000 years ago making use of plants, herbs, and spices to help eliminate impurities, reduce stress, treat symptoms, and improve the overall quality of life. 

Tulsi Ginger Tea

Tulsi is a medicinal herb widely used in Ayurvedic principles. It comes from the mint family, and it has potent soothing agents that may help to reduce stress levels. As a tonic it may help to restore physiological balance and improve well being. As an herb it is often used to create remedies that incorporate other plants and spices such as herbal teas to help relieve symptoms of the common cold, chills, and sore throats. It is often used with ginger to help treat stomach aches, motion sickness, and joint pain. 

How To: Chop up ginger and tulsi leaves, add them to a cup of water and boil for 5-7 minutes, then strain the mixture into a cup. You can add raw organic honey to taste and serve hot to enjoy. Some also add a dash of cinnamon or turmeric depending on personal taste.

Garlic Milk

Garlic contains sulfur rich compounds with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also an antioxidant and may help to treat toothaches, constipation, coughs, joint pain, and purify blood. Ayurveda discourages excessive consumption as it is said to stimulate carnal energy. However, garlic milk is used for its antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects and is most often drunk before bed as it can cause sleepiness. 

How To: Mix one part raw or unpasteurized milk to four parts of water in a saucepan. Wrap 10-13 garlic cloves in thin cotton cloth and tie with string. Steep the bag in the liquid mixture heating over a low flame until the mixture has reduced to about a cup of water. Remove the bag of garlic cloves, and pour into a cup. Add raw organic honey, cinnamon or muscovado to taste and serve warm. 

Turmeric Buttermilk

Turmeric contains bioactive compounds that have an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect against heartburn, constipation, and diarrhea. It also enhances immunity and helps to prevent the onset of various diseases as well as premature aging. Turmeric has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years as such it is used for many ailments. Turmeric buttermilk is commonly used to help restore digestion. 

How To: Blend plain yogurt for 3-5 minutes, add cold water and blend for another 3-5 minutes then discard the foam from the top of the mixture. Repeat the process until the mixture appears watery with a white and cloudy appearance. Add some turmeric powder and stir in. Then add a pinch of unrefined salt or chopped cilantro leaves to taste and mix. Pour the mixture into a container and serve at room temperature. 

Having a strong immune system can help to reduce your risk of getting sick or contracting viral/bacterial infections. Remedies whether they be simple holistic home remedies or from another reputable source that uses antiviral and antibacterial foods, may help to enhance your immunity.
