Other conditions, such as certain cancers and infections, absolutely need everything that medical science can muster to allow optimal recovery or even a cure. So how does one know what treatment, if any, is right for which ailment?

Optimal medical care requires the right amount of treatment at the right time. Sometimes it’s a pill or surgery, other times education or a simple lifestyle change. I believe the physician does play a pivotal role. The key is finding the right doctor who is willing to listen attentively, discuss matters with you, educate you, and review the many options available for your condition. This includes a discussion of both the risks and potential benefits of any intervention including doing nothing.

Second opinions or visits to a respected specialist can also be helpful. Unfortunately, our society, and many of our doctors, prefer a pill rather than a change of habit or lifestyle. They want the black bag, not the gym bag. Ultimately you need to become your own educated responsible advocate-willing to do your share to help your body and your doctor get you better.

FitTip:

Whenever any healthcare practitioner offers a remedy, ask for all treatment alternatives including pros and cons of each. Don’t forget to also ask about what you can do to help your body recover, and what you might be doing to interfere with this remarkable repair process.
