Vitamin K Correlates to Hip Fracture Incidence

Vitamin K is needed for proper bone formation and blood clotting by activating certain proteins. Dr. Douglas Kiel and colleagues at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged Research and Training Institute reviewed data of 335 men and 553 women, report that despite and absence of a correlation between dietary intake of vitamin K and bone mineral density, the relationship between vitamin K intake and hip fracture was found to be significant. Individuals with the highest vitamin K intake were found to be 65% less likely to suffer fracture.
