University of Minnesota plans human-embryo research

MINNEAPOLIS

The University of Minnesota says it plans to use private funding to begin research on donated human embryos and create a new source of stem cells, which scientists hope can be directed to replace organs and tissues.

The university, a leader in adult-stem-cell research, told the Star Tribune that the embryo research would be done in campus labs funded with money from nonprofit and biotech companies. It is unclear how much the embryo research effort will cost.

No public money would be sought for the research, said Dr. Frank Cerra, senior vice president for health sciences at the university.
