New research has revealed that a child’s socioeconomic status has a major impact upon whether his or her genetic susceptibility to obesity is expressed or controlled. Dr Harold Snieder of the Medical College of Georgia and colleagues studied the genotype of nearly 500 black and white US children and young adults aged between 5 and 25. Results showed that those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds were significantly more likely to display the negative effects of genes known to play a role in the development of obesity.
