Seek Out Hidden Sugar

With added sugar hiding in 74% of packaged foods, Americans consume an average of 66 pounds of added sugar per year.  SugarScience, an educational initiative, has completed a comprehensive review of more than 8,000 scientific papers studying added sugar and its impact on health. Not only does sugar make us fat, it also may make us sick, as increasing numbers of the population are succumbing to diabetes, metabolic sundrome, heart disease, and – liver diseases previously unseen in children.  Warning that: “Added sugar is hiding in foods that many of us consider healthy, like yogurt and energy bars. It is also added to savory foods, such as ketchup, breads, salad dressing and pasta sauce,” SugarScience urges for revised food labeling to identify hidden sugars – notably, ingredients such as sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup, barley malt, dextrose, maltose and rice syrup.”
