Plant Compound Showing Promise For Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s

Conditions such as depression, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease are very challenging to treat and prevent leaving researchers around the world stumped, and working around the clock to try and develop new methods which may be effective; a simple plant compound may make all the difference in the world and is showing much potential.

Inspired by research showing flavonoids having positive effects on memory and learning, Brazilian researchers have demonstrated apigenin flavonoids can help to improve formation of neurons and strengthen connections between brain cells, as published in the journal Advances in Regenerative Biology.

When applied to human stem cells in a lab neurons were observed to have formed in less than one month, which the researchers claim wouldn’t have happened with apigenin being applied; these neurons appeared to form stronger, more sophisticated communication between each other which is essential for brain health, particularly memory and learning.

These findings may be useful as an alternative to estrogen based therapies which can delay onset of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders but raise risk of cardiovascular issues and estrogen dependent tumors.

Apigenin binds to estrogen receptors known to impact function, plasticity, maturation and development of the nervous system which may provide those who suffer with Alzheimer’s disease, depression, Parkinson’s disease, and schizophrenia a safer treatment option.

Providing protective effects on the brain are only part of what this simple plant compound can do. Apigenin has also been shown to slow proliferation of cancer cells and to promote cell death via stopping the growth of blood vessels tumors need to thrive and depriving them of oxygen, blood, and nutrients. Apigenin can also help to decrease inflammation and help to reduce elevated blood sugar levels.

According to Stevens K. Rehen increasing flavonoid intake could have a positive impact on conditions that affect brain health in general right now; and flavonoids are present in high amounts in some foods so we can speculate that a diet rich in them may influence formation of neurons and the way they communicate within the brain.

Apigenin and other flavonoids are easy to find in many common foods such as fruits and vegetables; some of the best choices are parsley, chamomile, thyme, and celery, but it can also be found in grapes and cherries. One can get apigenin via a supplement but it is always ideal to get it from natural sources as they contain other chemical constituents which may enhance its beneficial powers. Other foods that have high flavonoid content include onions, berries, black/green/oolong teas, and dark chocolate.

Those who look towards nature, and scientists who look back at nature are increasingly being rewarded with incredible and rewarding discoveries such as this, anyone who wants to protect their overall physical and mental health can benefit from making better healthier lifestyle choices which includes eating a balanced diet of full of plenty organic, naturally flavonoid rich foods.
