Parkinson’s and the Environment

Parkinson’s disease afflicts more 1.5 million Americans. About 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The disease usually develops after age 65. Parkinson’s is a brain disorder that occurs when neurons in a particular section of the brain die or become impaired. Healthy cells provide the vital chemical dopamine, which allows smooth body coordination. If most of the dopamine-producing cells become damaged, symptoms of Parkinson’s appear.
