AndroGel, a topical gel rubbed into the skin and delivering testosterone, hit the U.S. marketplace in June 2000. It treats the condition known as andropause — commonly referred to as ‘male menopause,’ which begins with hormonal, physiological and chemical changes that occur in all men generally between the ages of 40 and 55, and reflects a slowing down of all of the body’s physiological processes, as well as psychological changes such as reduced sex drive. Androgel’s distributor, Unimed Pharmaceuticals, Inc. of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, cautions against use by men with breast or prostate cancer and women.
