New Non-Controversial Source of Stem Cells Identified

Researchers from McGill University in Canada have identified a new, non-controversial source of stem cells capable of maturing into a variety of cell types. Dr Freda Miller and colleagues isolated stem cells called SKPs from the dermis of adult and juvenile rats. Tests on the cells revealed that they were able to proliferate and differentiate into neurons, glial cells, smooth muscle cells, and fat cells in culture. Furthermore, human studies revealed that similar cells are present in human skin. The discovery is a significant step forward in stem cell research and therapeutics as it allows scientists to harvest stem cells without the ethical complications surrounding current methods. The new source will also eliminate the problems of transplant rejection as cells can be removed from the patient themselves.
