N.C. A&T to open gene research center

The Associated Press Jan 29, 2004 :10:52 am ET GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina A&T State University is starting a gene center that will research diseases that disproportionately affect minorities. The university will use a $4.6 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to open three projects that will explore hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease and a virus that holds promise as an AIDS vaccine. All three ailments are more prevalent among blacks than whites. The money will pay for research, the refurbishment of two laboratories and allow the school to hire a genetic researcher.
