Finnish researchers have discovered that the radiation emitted by mobile phones can cause changes in human cells that could affect the brain. Results of the two-year-long study revealed that exposure to radiation from mobile phones dramatically increased the activity of hundreds of proteins in human cells. Study leader Darius and his colleagues found that the increased activity of at least one of the proteins affected could increase the permeability of the blood brain barrier. The blood brain barrier prevents harmful substances from reaching the brain, thus an increase in the permeability of the barrier could have important consequences. Other recent studies have linked mobile phone use with headache, fatigue, sleep disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease.
