Maple Syrup Concentrate Fights Bacteria

With levels of antibiotic-resistant bacteria on the rise, scientists have been searching for ways to cut usage of antibiotics. Research conducted by Professor Nathalie Tufenkji’s and colleagues at McGill University’s Department of Chemical Engineering suggests that a concentrated extract of maple syrup may help to lower antibiotic usage by increasing bacteria’s susceptibility to common antibiotic drugs. The researchers tested the effects of the extract (Phenolic-Rich Maple Syrup Extract [PRMSE]).on disease-causing strains of common bacteria, including E. coli. Results showed that while PRME was mildly effective in combating bacteria on its own, it was particularly effective when used in combination with antibiotics. Furthermore, PRME was found to act synergistically with antibiotics in destroying resistant communities of bacteria known as biofilms, which are common in difficult-to-treat infections, such as catheter-associated urinary tract infections. “We would have to do in vivo tests, and eventually clinical trials, before we can say what the effect would be in humans,” said Professor Tufenkji. “But the findings suggest a potentially simple and effective approach for reducing antibiotic usage. I could see maple syrup extract being incorporated eventually, for example, into the capsules of antibiotics.”
