Liver Health “E”ssentials

Vitamin E is a nutrient that is essential in scavenging free radicals and preventing oxidative stress – a key process implicated in aging and aging-related diseases.   Among obese adults, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a liver disease that is characterized by fat accumulation, oxidative stress and liver inflammation.   Danny Manor, from Case Western Reserve University (Ohio, USA), and colleagues studied a mouse model that was engineered to omit a protein that regulates Vitamin E levels. Oxidative stress rose, and fat deposition and liver injury resulted.  However, the researchers observed that vitamin E supplementation averted the majority of NASH-related symptoms.
