The saying that life begins at 40 is not quite true, new research has revealed that life simply slows down when most of us hit the big 40. Work carried out by UK researchers showed that reaction times, concentration span, and powers of memory begin to noticeably deteriorate from the age of 40 onwards. Study leader Keith Wesnes said, “By the time you reach middle age you can be 10 to 15% slower to react than when you are in your 20’s.” The exact reason for the decline in ability to carry out cognitive tasks with age is not yet established, however, some speculate that declines could be linked to the efficiency of neurotransmission.
