Jellyfish Protein Helps to Improve Cognitive Function

Apoaequorin, a protein found in jellyfish, helps to boost cognitive function in people with memory problems.  In a study involving 35 adults, average age 61 years, who reported memory concerns, apoaequorin improved scores on cognitive tests by 14% in 60 days. It is posited that apoaequorin, a calcium-binding protein, replaces proteins depleted with aging and that contribute to cognitive issues.    Because this unique mechanism slows the cellular events that can lead to neurotoxicity, researchers are hopeful this jellyfish protein may be of benefit for a variety of other neurological conditions.

“Quincy Bioscience Receives Patent for Jellyfish Protein Aequorin,” Quincy Bioscience, July 8, 2010.
