A major new study has revealed that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can offer "significant" benefits in the quality of life women can enjoy.
The international Wisdom study, the results of which will be published on BMJ.com this week, examined the health-related lifestyle of 5,692 women aged between 50 and 69 living in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, Eurekalert notes.
In news that may be of interest to anti-aging physicians, three out of four females who have experienced night sweats or hot flushes admitted that these symptoms had vanished after 12 months on HRT, according to the International Menopause Society.
An improvement in sleep, sexual activity and joint pain was also witnessed in women who were past the menopause.
Dr Roger Lobo, speaking for the society, said: "While it has been well established that quality-of-life measures are improved in younger symptomatic women, this paper adds some information that even older women may benefit."
In related news, lowering cholesterol earlier in life may save lives, a team of University of California, San Diego School of Medicine physician-researchers has pledged.
