How Working Out Works the Mind

We all know it’s inevitable, but when “old-age” rears its ugly head, most of us would do anything to reverse it by 15-20 years. Skin and other parts sag, vision and hearing decrease, we run out of energy faster and our brains just don’t seem to think as fast or as clearly as they did just a few years ago.

With all the innovations in the emerging science of “anti-aging” it is actually possible to turn back the clock, especially with our minds. Many scientists now believe that dementia is not inevitable and that it can be helped or reversed by combining a few simple lifestyle choices such as increased exercise and improved diet.

Research has shown a greater degree of Alzheimer’s disease resulting from a lack of physical activity; which leads to 3 major contributors to old age: obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Those three conditions which can be reduced or eliminated with diet and exercise, are the main contributors to pre-mature aging and death.

The “Tau” protein in the brain are linked to Alzheimer’s and dementia. A study at Wake Forest University proved that aerobic exercise may lower Tau levels. Increasing the heart and breathing rate improves blood and oxygen flow to all parts of the body, especially the brain. This increase delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen will lead to improved memory and cognitive functioning (focus, organization, planning, etc.).

Most seniors loath exercise. Many feel that after working most of their lives and raising children they deserve to rest and relax … they become couch potatoes. However, nothing could be farther from the truth. Life can begin at 60 if you’ll just get off the couch and do anything. This doesn’t mean you have to become an athlete, but rather just moving and doing something every day will make a huge difference in your health and longevity. Simply walking every day or two, or biking, or swimming, can improve circulation, boost your brain and improve your attitude, allowing you to live better longer.

Yoga, Pilates, and/or simple squats will also get you in better shape, health as well as making a huge contribution to your joy of life.

In terms of diet, there are hundreds of studies, articles, books, and papers everywhere you look. They all boil down to a few simple tips. The diets that are most effective for heart health are, not surprisingly right for brain health also. That which protects the vessels of the heart also protect the vessels in the brain; the more circulation, the healthier the heart and brain.

The components of a heart-healthy diet are similar to those of the Mediterranean diet which includes:

  • limited red meat
  • fruits and vegetables
  • olive oil
  • whole-grain breads and cereals
  • beans and nuts
  • moderate wine consumption, 1-2 glasses a day,
  • grape juice is equally beneficial if not diabetic as it’s very high in sugar.

Memory can also be enhanced with certain types of supplements such as:

  • antioxidants
  • omega-3 and other essential fatty acids
  • essential trace minerals
  • as well as several different amino acids

Combination of both a daily exercise regime and diet modification may not only add years to your life, but reestablish the energy and memory you once had … what have you got to loose?
