Some 610,000 Americans die every year to heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the country; of which coronary artery disease is the most common form caused by atherosclerosis/buildup of plaque in the arteries.
In this clinical study effects of different medications, strategies, and supplements were analyzed on the arteries of a group of volunteers aged 45-60 years old who were diagnosed as class IV, meaning their arteries were constricted by plaque levels not exceeding 50% of the total area. The main subject group was divided into smaller groups of those receiving diet and exercise recommendations; another was given aspirin; one received pine bark alone; another was given gotu kola alone; and the last group was given pine bark and gotu kola together.
After 30 months the poorest outcome was found to be in the group receiving diet and exercises recommendations only where more than 20% progressed to class V and had worsened plaque constriction. Those treated with combination of 100mg of both pine bark and gotu kola daily had better results, only experiencing 1.1% worsening constriction suggesting plaque progression was 95% lower than the diet/exercise control group.
Scientist examined the effects of the combined natural compounds on plaque stability, which is a key factor in preventing heart attacks and stroke, during the latter phase of the study results suggest: 150mg of pine bark and 225mg of gotu kola per day is linked to beneficial effects on plaque density; and helped to reduce length, height, and number of plaques.
French pine bark/Pycnogenol is available in liquid, capsule, and tablet form, experts suggest using high quality formulations standardized to contain 85-90% OPCs; while some studies suggest higher doses most experts note that healthy circulation can be promoted with 50-100 mg of pine bark 3 times a day. Gotu Kola extract is available in tinctures, tablets and capsule formulations, while the plant itself is available in dried form which can be used to brew a calming tea. As always it is suggested to consult a healthcare professional before taking any herb/extracts/supplements to treat atherosclerosis or any condition to make sure it is best for you and avoid any possible complications.
