Early Cancer Detection Is Key for Diabetic Women

In that type 2 diabetes causes insulin-like hormones to circulate through the body, Tel Aviv University (Israel) researchers report the condition may double the risk of female genital and other cancers.  Gabriel Chodick and colleagues analyzed data involving 16,721 diabetics, differentiating between men and women and defining the relative cancer risks for each group.   Tracking the incidence of cancer over an eight-year follow-up period, the team found that diabetes exerted a protective effect in men, reducing the risks of prostate cancer by up to 47%,  However, in women the team observed that the interaction of diabetes and female hormones exaggerate cancer risk, thereby increasing the potential for cancers of the uterus and ovaries by up to two-fold.
