Roughly one third of men diagnosed with prostate cancer could benefit from cryosurgery, say researchers. Preliminary results of a study by researchers at a Florida hospital have shown that cryosurgery, where the tumor is killed by freezing it, is an effective treatment for men that have just one tumor on their prostate gland. Men diagnosed with prostate cancer are often told to wait a while to see if the tumor grows, as commonplace treatments for the disease can cause impotence, incontinence, and bowel problems. However, according to the doctors behind this study, cryosurgery can remove the need for this “watchful waiting” period as it is significantly less likely to cause the problems associated with other treatments.
