The American Medical Association Conference for Science Reporters have been treated to a sneak preview of a soon-to-be-published book The Quest for Immortality: Science at the Frontiers of Aging. The book examines societies obsession with immortality and discovers that we are are not that much different from our Victorian ancestors in our attitudes to aging. The book places an emphasis on improving the quality of life as opposed to obsessing about getting old, although the book does warn people to steer clear of known age accelerators such as excessive alcohol, smoking and excess weight. The author believes that the quality of life will improve and lifespan will gradually increase along with breakthroughs in biomedical science, he says “This is the real science of aging, which is by far more exciting and hopeful than the false and exaggerated claims being made by those selling longevity in a bottle.”
