Book Review: Plant Powered Protein

When some people are considering a more plant-based diet they wonder if they will be able to get enough protein. This book is a guide to help answer that question with a resounding yes with scientific studies, tables, charts, and in-depth nutritional analyses to show the abundant sources of high-quality plant-based protein. The authors also explain the roles of macronutrients and micronutrients as well as the amino acids that are found in protein that promote healthy growth. The authors even include the recommended daily allowances for protein of various age groups as well as offer suggestions on how to obtain all of the vital nutrients that each group requires. 

The authors explain how plant-based protein has some key advantages such as having a lighter carbon footprint and distinct health advantages. Plant protein contains vital compounds such as antioxidants, phytochemicals, and fiber which all help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases while avoiding some of the undesirable components that are more common to animal products.

About the Authors

Brenda Davis, RD, is one of the world’s leading plant-based pioneers and an internationally acclaimed speaker. Widely regarded as a rock star of plant-based nutrition, she has been referred to by VegNews as the “godmother” of vegan dietitians and was the 2022 recipient of the Plantrician Project’s Luminary Award. Brenda lives in Alberta, Canada, with her husband, Paul.

Vesanto Melina, MS, RD, is a sought-after speaker at health conferences worldwide. A consultant for individuals as well as the government of British Columbia, she is the lead author of the current position paper on vegetarian diets for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In 2016, Vesanto received the prestigious Ryley Jeffs Award from the Dietitians of Canada. She resides in Vancouver, Canada, with her partner, Cam.

Cory Davis, MBA, MSc.IM, P.Ag, is a professional agrologist who has worked in natural resource management since 2012. A lifelong advocate for animal welfare and environmental stewardship, he brings an integrated perspective to natural resource management and environmental stewardship. Cory lives in British Columbia, Canada.
