Abundant in anthocyanins, an antioxidant compound, blueberries have suggested by a number of published studies to help improve vision. Wilhelmina Kalt, from the Food and Horticulture Research Centre (Canada), and colleagues investigated the effects of blueberry anthocyanins on dark adaptation, functional night vision, and vision recovery after sudden exposure to bright light (retinal photobleaching). While a blueberry-supplemented diet did not help with dark adaptation or night vision, anthocyanin consumption did hasten the recovery of visual acuity after photobleaching.
