Dr. Basil N. Wilson of Island Health Services completes Fellowship in Functional, Regenerative and Integrated Medicine In conjunction with the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine and the Metabolic Medical Institute (partnered with The George Washington University School of Medicine & Health), Dr. Wilson has engaged in studies in the field of Functional, Regenerative and Integrated Medicine. Long believing that modern medicine focuses far too much on relieving and suppressing “symptoms” instead of uncovering and eliminating the root cause of symptoms and disease, Dr. Wilson set out to learn more. Over the past five years, he has pursued studies encompassing a metabolic and functional approach to Cardiovascular Disease, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nutrition, Autoimmune Disease and Toxicology, as well as delving into the new science of Epigenetics - focusing on how everyday life affects genetic expression. As defined by Dr. Frank Lipman: “Functional Medicine is a true combination of Chinese Medicine, Western Medicine and scientific research. It combines the philosophy of balance and how to restore function from Chinese Medicine and the knowledge of biochemistry and physiology of Western Medicine with the latest scientific research about how our genetics, environment and lifestyle all interact with each other. Functional medicine focuses assessment and intervention at the root levels of metabolic imbalance and is an evolution in the practice of medicine that addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century by focusing on prevention and uncovering the underlying causes of serious chronic disease. Instead of just suppressing symptoms, it deals with the root causes of disease and is less concerned with making a diagnosis and more concerned with the underlying imbalances, which are the mechanisms of the disease process. When a plant is sick or not doing well, you don’t paint it green; you look at the soil, sun, water and nutrients. This is exactly how I see the body, and the new Functional Medicine model looks at disease and dysfunction the same way. " Dr. Wilson’s philosophy approaches every patient as an individual – each with a unique genetic and lifestyle situation. While professional health care is a strong factor in staying well, it is imperative that patients also are willing to take responsibility for their own well-being. Medical professionals can only do so much. The best doctor is of no use if the patient isn’t interested in participating in their health. Patients need to be dedicated towards achieving optimal health – they must “want” to be well. Optimal health is more than just being free of disease; it is achieving your best level of vitality and well-being. This philosophy is for everyone, not just those who are currently ill and should begin as early as pre-natal planning. As the Metabolic Medical Institute (MMI) believes, we are on the verge of an epic shift in health care. The intersection of biotechnology, systems biology, and advanced analytical methodologies are enabling medicine to peer deeper than ever into the inner workings to the genome and metabolome, and its interactions with the environment. What science is discovering is also what the ancient healing traditions have always known – that every person is unique – and the more detailed our understanding of the individual, the earlier we can detect and intervene on imbalances long before disease arises. This is the new medicine. This is Integrative Functional and Metabolic Medicine. We are coming full circle – integrating techniques of the past with modern advances of the future. It is an exciting time to be in the medical field. Dr. Basil N Wilson is a Director at Island Health Services, 40 Point Finger Road, Paget, DV 04. Bermuda Tel: 441-236-0084
