Antioxidants Reduce Risk of Macular Degeneration

Results of a recent study by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore suggest that vitamin supplements could help to protect the eyesight of hundreds of thousands of US citizens. The researchers say that 8 million Americans aged 55 and over are at high risk of developing age-related macular degeneration – the leading cause of blindness among seniors aged 65 and over. Their research suggests that if all the 8 million adults deemed at high risk took daily supplements of vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and zinc, more than three hundred thousand of them would avoid advanced macular degeneration and vision loss for at least five years.
