Experts claim that more needs to be done in order to educate men about prostate cancer as the subject remains a male taboo.
Prokar Dasgupta, a consultant urological surgeon speaking on behalf of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre, said: "Men are learning more than their fathers or their grandfathers did about the prostate, the diseases that can affect it and, in particular, prostate cancer."
Research shows that although chances of survival are better than they were 30 years ago, if it is not caught early these chances are severely reduced.
One risk factor to be aware of is that the illness runs in families. If your father or grandfather have or have had prostate cancer it doubles the risk of developing the disease.
"The key words are: education, education and more education – that is already happening. It is no longer true to say that men do not realise what is going on with themselves," Mr Dasgupta maintained.
