First Case of Bird Flu Confirmed in Poland

Two swans in Poland have tested positive for the deadly strain of bird flu, the first cases to be found in the country, an official said Monday.

"Both birds had the H5N1 strain of bird flu," said Tadeusz Wijaszka, the director of the National Veterinary Research Institute in Pulawy, where the tests were conducted.

The wild swans were found dead Thursday in Torun, about 120 miles northwest of Warsaw.

Among the other European countries that have confirmed cases of the deadly H5N1 strain are Poland’s western and eastern neighbors, Germany and Ukraine.
