The transposon insertion regulates Indy expression level, which has experimentally been shown to affect life span and fecundity. The mechanism of heterozygote advantage has acted upon the Indy gene to assure increased reproductive fitness and, coincidentally, longer life span through regulatory transposon mutagenesis.
