Previous studies have shown a link between attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Dementia with Lewy body (DLB), the second most common cause of degenerative dementia in the elderly after Alzheimer’s Disease. Angel Golimstok, from Hospital Italiano Buenos Aires (Argentina), and colleagues studied 360 patients with degenerative dementia (comprised 109 people with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and 251 with Alzheimer’s), and included 149 matched controls. The team found that 48% of the patients with Dementia with Lewy body previously suffered from adult ADHD: a rate that was three-fold greater than the rate found in both the control group and the group with Alzheimer’s.
