Asia steps up bird-flu defenses

BEIJING South Korea and New Zealand announced on Wednesday that they planned to increase stocks of antiviral medicine to gird against bird flu, as China moved to keep homing pigeons – potential virus carriers – out of the skies.

The United States, meanwhile, grappled with fallout from its own milder outbreak.

With the human death toll from bird flu in Asia at 19, Laos said Wednesday it had slaughtered more than 40,000 chickens to forestall the disease. Across the region, tens of millions of chickens have been killed in prevention efforts and from the flu itself.
