Dr. Benjamin Leader and colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital administered androstrenedione to 42 healthy men. At 300 mg per day for a week, the supplement caused testosterone level to increase an average of 34%. Researchers urge caution in use of this supplement in men, as it increases estrogen in women — which may lead to development of breast tissue in men, as well as lower their high-density (‘good’) cholesterol.
