Popular herbal medicine has ‘no effect on dementia’

Ginkgo biloba has been proved ineffective as an alternative therapy for the treatment of dementia, according to a new study.

Research from the Alzheimer’s Society found that the natural remedy, believed to improve cognitive function and quality of life in people suffering from mild-moderate dementia, has no benefits for those with the disease.

Dr Robert McCarney, a lead researcher, said: "Previous research suggested the alternative therapy has a small but significant effect, however, our findings provide the most robust evidence yet that, sadly, Ginkgo biloba is not an effective treatment for dementia."

The Chinese medicine is one of the most popular herbs in the US and Europe.

Professor Clive Ballard, director of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, added: "It’s very disappointing that Ginkgo biloba does not benefit people with dementia. However, this is an extremely important finding. Thousands of people with dementia, who are already struggling to make ends meet, may buy Ginkgo biloba expecting an improvement in their memory."

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates there are between 220,000 and 640,000 Americans age 55 to 64 with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.ADNFCR-1506-ID-18642179-ADNFCR
