HA NOI –
Scientists at HCM City's Pasteur Institute have decoded the genetic sequence of the deadly bird flu virus H5N1, raising hopes of finding a vaccine to protect both humans and birds from the disease.
“At least, we should now know what kinds of vaccines we should use to prevent the disease,” Dr Cao Bao Van, head of the institute's biology department, said on Thursday.
Van said five health experts at the institute were hoping to complete a genetic map of the virus within a month.
The World Health Organisation's Dr Shigeyuki Itamura, based in HCM City, welcomed the news.
“It is a positive result,” he said.
