Scientists Track SARS Genetic Adaptations

Chinese scientists have documented how the SARS virus genetically evolved during last year's massive outbreak, adaptations that might have helped the deadly respiratory illness become more infectious.

Some of the genetic changes point to potential targets for future vaccine development, scientists at China's SARS Molecular Epidemiology Consortium concluded.

The work also bolsters evidence that SARS jumps from animals to humans, possibly frequently — and urges prompt control of new cases before viral strains have much time to adapt.
